Mining among Riskiest Occupations
Despite efforts over the last several decades to make mining safer for workers, the mining industry remains one of the most dangerous in the United States. According to statistics released by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, coal mining is by far the most dangerous occupation within the mining industry. Eighty-eight U.S. coal mine workers died from 2009 through 2011. During that same three year period, 55 workers died in other types of mines, such as mineral, stone, sand and gravel. New Jersey Woman Killed in Collision with Police Officer
A 21-year-old New Jersey woman was killed Oct. 30 when her Toyota Highlander collided with a Suffolk County Police car at an intersection where a traffic light was not operating, according to a report in the Port Jefferson Patch. The police officer was returning from a call related to Hurricane Sandy at the time of the crash. Three passengers in the Highlander as well as the officer were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. [Read more…]
Dangling Crane in Manhattan Blamed on Hurricane Sandy
It took a week before workers were able to secure the boom of a construction crane that snapped in the winds of Hurricane Sandy and dangled from the top story of a luxury high-rise under construction in midtown Manhattan. Engineers climbed to the top of the 74-story building during the storm to inspect the crane, and nearby buildings, including a hotel, were evacuated. Although city officials think the superstorm was to blame for the accident, they are examining the crane’s original positioning to determine whether it was properly secured prior to the storm.
