Hostile work environments occur when an employee is harassed on the basis of his or her race, citizenship, ethnicity, sex, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, or religion, to give a few examples.
Federal and state laws protect against hostile work environments. The law, however, does not protect against simple insults or isolated incidents. The actions complained of must rise to the level of an offensive, intimidating, or oppressive burden such that the victim's capacity to perform her job duties and to functions is diminished.
